New Shift Manager Seminar – Systems Thinking Simulation
A Shift Manager in a nuclear power plant plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the facility. They provide direct supervision to plant operators and other staff during their shift and are responsible for maintaining the safety of the plant, which includes overseeing all safety-related activities and making critical decisions during normal and emergency situations. They monitor the plant’s operational status, ensuring that all systems are functioning correctly and addressing any issues that arise.

New Shift Manager Seminar – Systems Thinking Simulation
Participants get feedback on their decisions by rolling the mouse over each node on the map. When the hit the Run button, the model applies algorithms to calculate how many months the plant would run error-free under their scenario. They can go back and adjust their selections to run multiple times. This is how they learn how each factor affects the others in the system.

Board Games and Simulations

Teaching Selling Skills Through Gamification
For Home Depot, created an engaging board game that challenged store associates to demonstrate their product knowledge and sales skills as they raced around a board based on a typical store layout. Players earned or lost satisfied customers based on correct or incorrect answers. The team that finished with the most satisfied customers won. This game and its associated sales training module won an Interenational Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) award of excellence.

Teaching Inventory Management Through Gamification
For Home Depot annual store manager meeting (over 2000 store managers) built on the success of Selling for Success to create a fast-paced, competitive experience where store managers showed off their knowledge of a new inventory management system. Using oversized store planogram game boards, teams of store managers earned and lost satisfied customers by correctly answering questions about the system functionality. The team that finished with the most satisfied customers won. The activity earned the highest satisfaction rating possible from the participants.

Upper Big Branch Coal Mine Explosion Board Game Simulation
Nuclear power plant department managers need to be able to ensure the plant produces electricity safely and reliably. This means adapting to the tension between safe operations and production. The coal mine simulation, based on an actual mine disaster, teams mine coal while responding to changes in the safety environment in the mine. Participants found the activity engaging, especially because it was based on actual events. The activity debriefs sparked many conversations about complex decision-making in a nuclear power plant.

Job Aids and Quick References

This job aid was created to support a short module on business writing. To drive home the point of fat-free writing, I designed it to look like the nutritional information panel on a cereal box.

Job aids, quick reference guides and other collateral can reinforce learning in the flow of work. This job aid reinforced a module on creating effective training.
